What To Do This Weekend

Thanks for stopping in today. The month of May really starts a crunch of extra activities for many people with graduations and holidays like Mothers Day and Memorial Day. But here at this blog, Saturdays remind us to set aside time for rest and seeking God. Why is that so important?

Think about these three facts:

1. God rested. He created the world in six days and on the seventh day He rested.

2. He commanded His people to rest. Number four of the Ten Commandments is: “Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work . . .” (Exodus 20:9,10)

3. God commanded that the land rest, too: “For six years you are to sow your fields and harvest the crops, but during the seventh year let the land lie unplowed and unused.” (Exodus 23:10,11) Even the dirt is supposed to rest; but you are better than dirt!

Begin to build margins into your life to allow for rest. Especially now, without a husband, when you’re trying to do the work of two people. Somehow, some way, let stuff go. Take up offers of help, or pay for help if you are able. Get a babysitter so you can have some time to do “nothing.”

Rest is a non-negotiable. If God wanted even the dirt to rest, He wants you to rest, too. That’s how He wired you. “Rest” at least once a week. Don’t wait to break down or burn out.

My intent is that Saturdays will remind and encourage you to rest sometime. It doesn’t really matter if it’s Saturday, Sunday or your day off work, just sanctify a time in your mind and follow through with it. Rest. Lie fallow--unplowed and unused for a period of time at least once a week.

Blessings on you this weekend,

ferree

  1. I have returned to enjoying my week-ends again. For so many of them, I worked as a hospital RN, along with shift rotations, on-call status, and every other year holidays (some in consecutive years during staff shortages). Too soon, after retiring early, my husband died and week-ends were miserably lonely. Now it's been 3 years and I take Saturdays to do what I choose to do, also read, and later prepare for church on Sundays. Sunday is my day of rest. I enjoy meeting up with my church friends, picking up the Sunday newspaper to read, and watching Super Soul Sunday on Oprah's TV network, OWN. A sweet afternoon nap (my siesta time) if hot outdoors, maybe listening to music while fixing up a meal for supper, and a walk with my dog before returning in the evening to TV to watch Masterpiece Theater on the PBS channel. I have come to look forward to week-ends off once again. God lead me here from where I was. I give him Glory for guiding me back from those days when week-ends were unbearably miserable alone.
