The Story Behind - "The Anchor Holds"

Last Sunday at church our choir sang this song, and Lawrence Chewning, the man who wrote it was visiting in the service. I had a feeling there was a story behind it, and it's one we can all relate to---when cherished dreams and loved ones slip away right through our hands and nothing we can do can bring them back.
This song grew out of such a time for Mr. Chewning, and as the words picture falling to our knees, and facing the raging seas of life, I couldn't help but picture the wonderful widows in our Lifeboat support groups. This could be our theme song!
I hope you'll be able to take 12 minutes today to hear the story and the song. It'll be the best minutes of your day. Have a good weekend.

  4. Amen, Sharon! When the church choir of over 100 people sang this out, I was tearing up too as I thought of how God has held our Lifeboats through these storms of sorrow. That line in the song about in the storms of life---that's when He's proved His love to me...how true when I look back on my life...

  5. Beautiful song of how God holds us through this difficult journey called widowhood. In the last 2 weeks, I've attended 3 funerals and it brings back my own pain. But I know God is faithful to see me through though my memories and pain want to overwhelm me, God continues to cover me with His peace.

  6. Lucy, your comment reminds me of the hymn, It Is Well With My Soul. "When sorrows like sea billows roll...it is well..." I can't imagine 3 funerals in 2 weeks. My heart goes out to you.
