Barbara Johnson

"Worry never empties tomorrow of its sorrow, but it does empty it of its strength. Don't let anyone rob you of your confidence in God. Know his Word. Hold on to his hand. He will make your impossible mission possible and your life so much more than bearable." (Women of Faith Study Bible, pg. 1589)

These are the words of Barbara Johnson, a lady who knew all about impossible circumstances and God's possibilities. As a speaker and writer she comforted millions of women with the comfort she received from God!

The “Geranium Lady,” (a nickname taken from her bestselling book, Stick a Geranium in Your Hat and Be Happy), started writing when she was over 50, after experiencing several tragedies, including:
  • Her husband suffered debilitating injuries in a near fatal car accident in the first half of their marriage.
  • One of their sons was killed in Vietnam.
  • Another son died in a car wreck caused by a drunk driver.
  • Their third boy disowned and separated from them for a period of time before God restored them.
Although Barbara Johnson (1927-2007) died after a six year fight against brain cancer, three years after her husband's death, her encouragement from the Lord lives on today. During her illness and widowhood she even added four more books to her list of published works!
Here's the Barbara Johnson website. Have you read any of her books or ever had the privilege of hearing her speak at a Women of Faith conference or elsewhere? What is your favorite quote from Barbara Johnson and isn't her website great?
I wonder if she ever imagined all that her life would hold and how she would count? Like each of us, she probably had no idea.

  3. She is a treasure! I saw her speak in the 1990s at a luncheon for my church's women's group. She was a hoot. I can't help but be encouraged when I learn of someone like Barbara who still finds her joy in the Lord even after so much tragedy. Not only am I encouraged, I'm challenged. If she can remain faithful and hopeful, I can too. I look forward to seeing her when we all get home to Heaven and thanking her for the lovely example she set for us all.

  4. I re-read Stick a Geranium in your Hat last night. It blessed me again as I face a new trial this week. I am saddened to learn of Mrs. Johnson's passing in 2007. I had not kept up with her since my first reading of her books. I am glad to know she wrote more in the 2000 years and hope to get them as they will be appropriate for the time of life I am in now. The world has lost a real treasure. Rest in peace.
