Mother's Day for Widows

For Mother’s Days
Past
And Mother’s Days
Future
For times both
Sweet and sad
In fullness and in
Famine

  1. Mother's Day was certainly bittersweet this year. While my mother was alive on Earth, I loved to bring gifts to her and also to her mother before she passed. I enjoyed many special outings with each of them. My husband also would celebrate the day with bringing me coffee in bed, doing some extra house chores needing to be done, and bringing me flowers. (He was a smart man). Although he was usually the lone guy among us, unless we had the big family gathering, Tony easily laughed along with us and made us laugh, too. Well, they are all gone and in Heaven now, so Mother's Day has changed. I still get a phone call, a card with flowers from both of my out-of state sons, and am delighted. I find comfort in placing Mom's favorite colored silk roses in the cemetery vase and seashells around her name on Mother's Day. I buy a few fragrant flowers for my bedroom and generally find things to enjoy that we once shared, like a favorite food or going to the plant nursery for yet another plant to buy, or read from one of her books. I am so thankful that I have these memories to draw from to honor Mother's Day. I'm also grateful that God's Grace has allowed me to celebrate each day better than when I first became widowed. The first Mother's Day without my husband was not at all fun. The second Mother's Day without my mother and him, seemed so empty. I have chosen to replace the former way of celebrating with a different way. I think Mom would have approved.

  2. Sheila, you've graced the day with beauty and honor and love. I'm sure your Mom would approve. Wish I could give you a big hug! I hope a lot of other widows will take some cues from you. It'll be encouraging for them to see how each year has gotten better for you as you took small steps of positive change. blessings and love to you...
