Have Thine Own Way, Lord

Hymns have a way of speaking to our hearts, and speaking for our hearts. I hope this one will do both for you as you take some time for rest this weekend.

Have Thine Own Way, Lord
Adelaide A. Pollard, 1862–1934
 1. Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way!
Thou art the Potter, I am the clay.
Mold me and make me after Thy will,
While I am waiting, yielded and still.
2. Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way!
Search me and try me, Master, today!
Whiter than snow, Lord, wash me just now,
As in Thy presence humbly I bow.
3. Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way!
Wounded and weary, help me I pray!
Power all power surely is Thine!
Touch me and heal me, Savior divine!
4. Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way!
Hold o'er my being absolute sway!
Fill with Thy Spirit till all shall see
Christ only, always, living in me!

Adelaide Pollard was inspired to write this hymn after she heard an elderly woman pray “. . . Lord, just have your way with our lives . . .” Nothing more is known of this woman who prayed, but I have a pretty strong hunch she must have been a widow. Would you agree?

Mr. Morgan writes, “Hymns are self-medicating therapies good for whatever ails us. From infancy to old age, they’re internal medicines that strengthen, heal, and uplift us. They’re vitamins for the soul and excellent antidotes against emotional disease and distress. From birth till death, hymns accompany us along life’s road.” (page 251).

  1. I agree Ferree she must have been a widow. I believe I will post the third verse on my Facebook wall. I remember singing this hymn at church growing up never did pay much attention to the lyrics then but they mean much more now.

  2. Yes, she might have been a widow I know because I have told the Lord the same about myself and my children since my husband went to be with Him. Hymns have ministered a lot to me in the past few weeks so also the stories behind them. We sing hymns now during our prayer time in the evenings and they provide comfort and hope for us. halima

  3. I love the words to this song, Have Thine Own Way, Lord. They encourage us as believers that we must be yielded to God in every and any circumstance that comes into our life. When we are sincerely yielded, waiting on Him and listening to His still small voice, we will hear and understand what He wants us to do, and how He wants to use us as He is molding our character. These words express the heart of what we need to be praying for. I love the fourth verse that relays what our ultimate desire should be. "Fill with Thy Spirit till all shall see, Christ only, always, living in me." LGO

  4. Another good one that I hum to myself a lot is this:

    I CAN'T EVEN WALK (Without You Holding My Hand)

    I thought number one woukd surely be me,
    I thought I could be what I wanted to be;
    I thought I could build on life's sinking sand,
    But I can't even walk without holding You holding my hand.

    'I can't even walk without You holding my hand,
    The mountain's too high and the valley's too wide;
    Down on my knees I learn to stand
    But I can't even walk without You holding my hand.'

  5. I too have found the truth in many hymns to minister deeply to my weary soul. This book looks really comforting.
    Thank you for sharing!
