International Widows Day--Help A Widow Today

This is something we should all be aware of: the plight of widows around the world.

The UN has declared this day to raise that awareness. Many Christian organizations and missions have been helping widows for centuries, but in case you didn't know the extreme hardship of widows in other countries, click here for a brief summary by a secular foundation, The Loomba Foundation.

Here are some statistics from their website:
•245 million widows and over 500 million children suffer in silence worldwide.

•Over 100 million widows live in poverty struggling to survive.

•Widowed women experience targeted murder, rape, prostitution, forced marriage, property theft, eviction, social isolation, and physical and psychological abuse.

•1.5 million widows’ children die before their fifth birthday.

Please pray for widows around the world, and find out ways you can get involved. Check with your pastor for mission organizations sponsored by your church or denomination. I'll have more about this next Thursday, too.
