Carol's Story

On Wednesdays we share stories of widows, a different one each week.
They might be from the Bible, from history, from the news headlines or maybe even from you! Your “ordinary” story told here will encourage others who understand how “extraordinary” it truly is, so please tell us about yourself!

Today we hear from Carol. She's been following this blog since it started back in February. She lives near Louisville, KY, and is raising a sweet little boy and girl. Check out her widow's group on Facebook, and maybe even attend the casual event she's planning!

Three years ago this summer, my husband Tim and I were discussing our upcoming four year wedding anniversary in November, the holidays with our two-year-old son and seven-month-old daughter, and the future. We had only lived in our new house for a year, so there were still things to work on and finish.

I was not prepared for what happened just months later, on September 26, 2007. Tim woke me up saying he thought he was having a heart attack. Three hours later he was pronounced dead, later to find out he'd died from a blood clot. My world tried to spin out of control, but I would try to keep myself sane for the sake of our babies.

I was surrounded by family and friends for about three months straight, but felt so alone. I couldn't believe this had happened to me! I was angry, confused, sad and hopeless, and through it all I knew God must have another plan, however I wasn't ready to accept it until about a year and a half after Tim's death.

On January 4, 2009, I recommitted my life to Christ, and vowed to let Him fill the void that I held onto. I had tried it my way for over a year, and knew that the only way to truly find comfort and hope again was through God. Its been a rough journey to say the least, and I still have days I'm not sure I can or want to go on. But through it all, my constant has been the Lord God Almighty! I have clung to Scripture, and I have an awesome family circle and an amazing church family. But now I know one thing I also needed all along was to be surrounded by people who had similar experiences.

Check out my new group on Facebook, called The Gathering Place. Its become a passion for me to connect with other women, young and old that have lost their husbands. The support and encouragement is much needed!

I am currently dating, fell absolutely in love much to my surprise. Chris is a rock for me, and loves me and my kids. We met at church, and both know that God has brought us together for a purpose. He is accompanying me on this journey, lending support and strength to both the kids and myself.

I hate the word 'widow' but accept that is WHAT I am, however not WHO I am. I am still trying to get used to being a single mom, or rather, parent. But every morning I thank God for another day to be alive. I am thankful for my kids' smiles, and for the strength to keep moving forward!
