What Is A Sabbatical?

Welcome to WCP. I don't post anything on Sundays, so I wanted to let you know that Saturdays are devoted to setting time aside for rest and seeking God. Why do I think that's so important?

Think about these three facts:

  • God created the world in six days and on the seventh day He rested.

  • He commanded His people to rest. Number four of the Ten Commandments is: “Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work . . .” (Exodus 20:9,10)

  • Even the dirt is supposed to rest! “For six years you are to sow your fields and harvest the crops, but during the seventh year let the land lie unplowed and unused.” (Exodus 23:10,11)
You are better than dirt.

Begin to build a margin into your life to allow for rest. Especially now, without a husband, when you’re trying to do the work of two people. Somehow, some way, let stuff go. Take up offers of help, or pay for help if you are able. Get a babysitter so you can have some time to do “nothing.” Sometimes people offered to do a couple loads of laundry for me, wash my floor, and help me with the kids' graduation open houses--I took them up on it! I’ve paid for a good housecleaning every now and then. Or I’ve lived with a dirty house. I just couldn't do it all.

But rest is a non-negotiable. If God wanted even the dirt to rest, He wants you to rest, too. That’s how He wired you. “Rest” at least once a week. Don’t wait to break down or burn out.

My intent is that Saturdays will remind and encourage you to rest sometime. It doesn’t really matter if it’s Saturday, Sunday or your day off work, just sanctify a time in your mind and follow through with it. Rest. Lie fallow--unplowed and unused for a period of time at least once a week.

Blessings on you this weekend,

ferree
